From Excel to Python: Authentic Assessments Without AI Cheating | InstructureCon 2026

Learn how to securely run assessments with Excel, Python and other applications

Authentic assessment is quickly becoming the norm. Accreditation bodies increasingly expect it, and institutions are moving beyond multiple choice toward assessments in the tools graduates actually use: Excel in accounting, R and SPSS in statistics, Python, Java and VS Code in computer science.

But letting students work in locally installed apps opens the door to leaked assessment content, unrestricted internet access and AI assistants built right into the software, while version differences cause headaches on exam day. In this InstructureCon 2026 session, we share a three-layer model developed with Dutch institutions (prevention, detection and response) and show how it lets you run controlled assessments securely on any device.

What you will learn:

  • Why locally installed apps fall short for authentic assessments
  • How a three-layer model of prevention, detection and response protects integrity
  • How running apps in Schoolyear gives every student the same environment, on their own laptop or a managed computer
